Not Lonely Anymore

Not Lonely Anymore

Struggle, Strength, Reclamation
Lyrics by Leslie Benson, 2011

I held my breath,
held my tongue,
’til I knew
the deed was done.
I’m not lonely anymore,
since I left you.

There were times
I questioned myself.
Had I become
someone else?
But you don’t own me anymore,
and I do. Ohh!

Thought you were right with me;
You don’t get off that easy.
I, I, I, I … I’m gonna remind you,
Gonna remind you.

Your love is poisonous.
Your love is poison.
Too tired to roll over…
I’m too tired; I’m too tired of you.

There were times
when I felt weak,
needed you
to help me speak.
But I’m much LOUDER now
…without you! Ohh!

Thought you were right with me;
You don’t get off that easy.
I, I, I, I … I’m gonna remind you,
Gonna remind you!

Your love is poisonous.
Your love is poison.
Too tired to roll over.…
I’m too tired; I’m too tired of you!

About the Song

What started out as homage to the way doo-wop was sung in the 1950s ended up incorporating electronic sounds from the mastermind of pianist Jason Reed Milner. Vocalist and lyricist Leslie I. Benson, the other half of the songwriting duo, wasn’t afraid to get dirty in the studio during the recording process. Channeling Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” Benson found her inspiration. With a hint of angst, the heroine gets the last laugh in this tale of love gone wrong.

A demo of “Not Lonely Anymore” made its radio debut on 91.9 FM WITT Zionsville, Ind., during an interview with Irene & Reed by host Noel Hopkins of the Indy Music Show, which aired on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011.
